Bowls proves the perfect distraction

Ashcombe Park Bowling Club last week welcomed members of the local branch of the Alzheimer’s Society to spend the morning trying out the game of bowls, followed by tea and biscuits.

Chaperoned and tutored by Dave Lewis, Sean Hopkins and Shane Mansell, it was a bright sunny morning and offered a few hours respite from what is an awful condition that robs sufferers of their memories and independence. In England alone, the number of diagnoses has risen to just under 500,000 as of June this year.

Paul Hatton, Group Facilitator, Alzheimer’s Society said: “We received such a warm, wonderful reception and could not have imagined the patience and care we received from members who appreciated and considered our lack of knowledge of the game, making adaptations and showing true kindness.”  It can be a very tough life for people living with dementia and it is often the kindness of others that makes a real difference. Thank you for being so understanding of that point and thank you again for making our morning very special.

Our thanks to those that organised and helped out with this, but especially to Shane Mansell for not only helping with the game, but making all the teas and coffees.

Sean Hopkins said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the Alzheimer’s Society to our inclusive and friendly Club. And the sun shone for the duration of their visit so an added bonus!”
